Pet Separation

Pet separation is a struggle faced by many of our pets.  Do you have a dog that is unhappy when he is separated from the rest of the family?  If so, this is a great post for you to read.

My gal Amber is a pet care professional and a true dog lover.  In her reviews for GEO, she utilizes the Young Living Animal Scents products and gives us feedback on how best to use them.  This post deals with finding support for pet during times of separation.

Amber’s Review

My first experience with the Animal Scents line was T-Away. I have a very nervous two-year old Puli dog named Stinson. I am always looking for new things to try to help promote his feelings of security. As he was growing up, he struggled a lot.  At one point I couldn’t leave him alone without him barking the entire time I was gone, whether it be 20 minutes or 8 hours. Over time, I slowly got him used to being in a kennel when we weren’t home, but he still didn’t seem 100% content and would have random barking spurts.

As soon as I got my T-Away in the mail I got to work because as with most things in dog training, there is no “quick fix”. In order for T-Away to be most effective you have to help your dog associate it with positive things. I did this by diffusing it when the whole family was home in the evening relaxing. This is also when I feed the dogs’ dinner so that was an added positive association with the scent. Over time Stinson started to realize that every time he smelled T-Away it meant good things were going to happen and a very strong association between the two formed in his brain.

Happy & Calm Stinson

You can also try doing other things your dog really enjoys like playing with toys, getting treats, cuddling, or chewing on a bone while T-Away is diffusing. The more times you can repeat this process the better, as it will make that positive association stronger and stronger. This will make T-Away much more effective in whatever circumstance you are using it in. After a few weeks of training I starting putting T-Away in the diffuser about 15 minutes before we leave the house. This really help him deal with pet separation.  It promoted feelings of calm, and now Stinson sleeps peacefully in his kennel the entire time we are gone. Sometimes he will even go in his kennel by himself to sleep which is a huge accomplishment!
